PIXEL FORM (PHILL STEARNS), USA

Phillip Stearns (AKA Pixel Form) is an interdisciplinary multi-media artist and electronics arts educator, and 2007 alumnus of Cal Arts' graduate music composition program in experimental sound practices.  He views technology as a site for exploring the global society-environment system and how changes in the relationship between society and environment manifest in our technology.  Through the medium of networked systems---both electronic and biological---his work explores the ecologies and horizons of information, politics, noise, control, proximity, subversion, corruption, interconnectedness and interrelatedness.  Central to his practice as a visual artist and a performer are the use of custom electronics, hand-craft, hardware hacking, media technologies, and iterative processes marked by a judicial use of materials, restraint, simplicity, a careful balance between conceptual depth and playfulness.

The reality of the information age is distinctly different from its media portrayal.  Rather than connecting us, we are becoming increasingly isolated.  Bringing the world to our finger tips through mediated technologies has had the effect of keeping us confined to the physical reality of the computer screen.  The illusion of mobility afforded by smart phones and other high power integrated computing systems linked to telecommunications networks is powerful and we find ourselves loath to accept the fact that even when interacting through the screen of our Blackberries and iPhones, that we are increasingly detached from what is going on right before us.  How then can we claim to be more aware of the world beyond our own localities, or national borders for that matter?  This work is a meditation on the themes of media saturation, isolation, and the diametrical nature of hyper-virtualized physical reality, contextualized by media coverage of the death of Michael Jackson and the death of people living in a town in Afghanistan.
